This glossary contains all the words defined in the exhibition.

Alginates
Natural gelling agent derived from algae.
Anadromous
Travels upriver to lay its eggs in freshwater.
B
Biofouling
Accumulation of living organisms on surfaces immersed in water.
Bryozoan
A group of small invertebrates forming colonies.
C
Caroténoids
Pigment that gives an orange colour.
Catadromous
Freshwater fish that migrate to saltwater to reproduce.
COSEWIC
Comitee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC).

DFO
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

Ecosystem
All living organisms interacting within and with a defined environment.

Exoskeleton
Protective external skeleton, like the shell of a mollusc or the carapace of a crustacean.

Food web
Collection of food chains present in an ecosystem.
Fry
Young, newly hatched fish.

Gamete
Reproductive cell, involved in sexual reproduction.
Gametophytes
Plant organisms derived from spores, which produce male and female reproductive cells.
Glucosamine
Carbohydrate extracted from chitin.
Gregarious
Lives in groups, in shoals.

Halieutic
Pertaining to fishing, mariculture and marine product processing.
Hatchery
Aquaculture facility dedicated to the production of eggs, larvae or spores.
Hemolymph
Equivalent to blood in invertebrates.
Hermaphrodite
A living being that is both male and female.
Hydroxyapatite
Mineral formed from calcium phosphate.

Animals without vertebrae.

Plankton made up of plant organisms.
Polyphenol
Molecules produced by plants to defend themselves against ultraviolet radiation.

Ranges
Geographical area in which a species is found.

Sedentary
Rarely or never changes habitat.
Spat
Last larval stage of molluscs.
Spore
Single-cell element of a plant that allows it to multiply and disperse.
Sporophylls
Leaves specialized in carrying a plant’s reproductive organs.
Substrate
Refers to soil type.

Total allowable catch (TAC).
